Healing Across Generations: Rewriting the Conversation on Mental Health

​Mental health conversations within many Asian communities have often been shaped by values of sacrifice, resilience, and endurance. In many households, love was expressed through hard work and providing for family, while emotional struggles were rarely discussed. As a result, patterns of silence, emotional suppression, and self-reliance have been passed down across generations. 

For many older adults today, these patterns can feel especially familiar. Major life transitions, underdiagnosis, stigma regarding mental health, and isolation can deepen emotional strain that is already difficult to express. According to the World Health Organization, one in seven adults aged 60 and older experience common mental disorder. Yet, many Asian Americans continue to underutilize mental health services due to language barriers, limited access to care, mistrust of providers, and deeply rooted stigma.

In many communities, mental health struggles are still misunderstood or seen as something that should remain private. Because of this, many individuals and families suffer in silence, even when help is available. 
At the same time, conversations around mental health are beginning to change. Social media, online communities, and greater public awareness have made it easier for people to share their experiences and learn more about anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, and therapy. Younger generations are becoming more open about seeking support and prioritizing emotional well-being. 

A generational shift is also emerging. Older generations often express care through duty, sacrifice, and emotional restraint, while younger generations are increasingly open to discussing mental health and seeking support in schools, workplaces, and online communities. 
While access to culturally competent care is expanding—with more Asian therapists, multilingual services, and community-based organizations—barriers such as cost, language access, and fear of family judgment still remain. 

​At APCTC, we are committed to supporting this shift by providing culturally responsive mental health and community services for individuals and families across Los Angeles and Riverside Counties. A wide range of services is available based on the unique needs of each individual and family, with a primary focus on serving monolingual Los Angeles Medi-Cal recipients. Services are offered in multiple languages, including Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, and Taiwanese), Cambodian (Khmer), Korean, Filipino (Tagalog), Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese, to ensure care is accessible, respectful, and inclusive for the communities we serve.
